The founders of Alethman, in their own words

Introducing Alethman News, and this blog

Two new places to read Alethman: a newsroom where every article carries the outlets behind it, and a blog where the founders write in their own names.

Alethman reads news coverage across the United States, India and other countries, groups articles by the event they describe, and shows where the coverage splits, who is carrying each version, and which claims are disputed and what the record says. Until now that work lived inside our products. Starting today, some of it is public.

Alethman News

Alethman News publishes articles built from the stories our engine tracks. Each article starts from one event that many independent outlets reported. Before anything is written, the reports are read, and every fact in the article must appear in at least one of them. Where outlets give different figures, a different cause or a different timeline, the article says so and says who reported what.

Every article lists its sources at the foot: the outlet, the headline, the date and a link, with the reports we read marked as read. A reader should be able to check any sentence against a linked report. We paraphrase; we do not reproduce other outlets' work.

Some articles are claim checks. They take one public claim, from an official, a party, a company or a widely shared message, and set it against what the reporting shows. The label on a claim check describes the record, never the truth: consistent, inconsistent, contested, unconfirmed or missing context. Alethman does not decide who is right. It shows what was reported, by whom, and what is still open.

The live feed shows what the engine is reading right now: the events the most independent outlets are covering, and the newest headlines as they land, each linked to the outlet that published it. Anyone may cite it or embed it, with the line Powered by Alethman.

This blog

This blog is where Alethman's founders write in their own names: about the news, technology, India, the United States, and building a company that reads the world's coverage. Posts here are opinion and analysis, signed by the person who wrote them. The newsroom stays neutral; the blog is where people speak for themselves.

One account for both

You can make a free account on either site, with an email address or with Google, and it works on both. An account lets you save articles to read later and, if you choose, receive our newsletter when it starts. We store your name, your email address and your choices, and nothing else; you can change them or delete your account at any time from the account page.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we correct it at the foot of the article, with the date, and we do not quietly edit it away. Write to contact@alethman.com with the article's address and what you think is wrong.

Posts on this blog are the signed views of their authors. Alethman News reports the news; this blog argues about it.
